Community involvement
As well as writing software, we find some time to get involved in some fundraising and community projects.
We've taken part in several Race for Life's recently, raising money for Cancer Research UK. We also participate in the Jeans for Genes initiative, raising funds for to help children and families affected by genetic disorders. Several of our Services team this year took part in the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride in aid of Macmillan Cancer nurses, returning battered but not beaten, vowing to get fitter next time!
Our favourite cause though is Halton Haven Hospice, here in Runcorn. The hospice cares for people with life-limiting illnesses living in our local area. It provides support to patients and their families according to their individual needs without charge, and is funded from charitable donations. Their justgiving page is here.
Sustainability
We've signed up to the 10:10 pledge — aiming to cut our carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. A tough challenge for sure, but nevertheless one worth aiming at.
We're doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint. Have a look at our carbon calculator to see how you or your business measure up. Here's a few of the things we've done, or are doing:
- reducing our energy consumption
- our lights now switch off automatically when there's no-one in the room
- cutting down on unnecessary travel
- reducing paper by managing projects electronically
- holding meetings electronically, rather than in person
- reducing water waste
- cutting out bottled water use
- commuting by bike when practical
- maximising our recycling — around 75% of what we throw out is re-used. Printer consumables, paper, card, plastics, tins, glass: it all counts.
