How's our carbon footprint?

Progressive Solutions has been working with Lancaster University recently to work on measuring our carbon and water footprint. We've now seen the results and had time to digest the information.

The review process provides a snapshot in time against these two key environmental performance indicators and gives a baseline position against which the company can monitor and review its ongoing progress.

The report defines:

  • current carbon and water footprints through the use of publically available Government-funded footprinting tools
  • an indication of performance against industry standards where possible
  • opportunities for improved performance.

We came out extremely well on water use — our usage per employee is at the very bottom of the scale for our industry type. Much of this is due to the modern eco-friendly design of Progressive House, built and commissioned in 2009.

Our carbon footprint comes out at 2.65 tonnes of carbon, per employee, per annum. Again this is a very creditable figure for our industry.

Amongst the recommendations for improvement, we identified a fairly substantial contribution from employee project travel, so this will be one area of focus over the coming months — how we can keep a lid on this component without impacting on the business or customer service. Whilst we're keen to reduce our footprint where we can, this has to be seen against the wider context of the company's overall business objectives.
